Alexander Belyi, professor, Candidate of Sciences (Geography), UNDP projects coordinator, member of the Global Ecological Fund hold a public lecture was held on the topic “Climate change in Kazakhstan: vulnerability assessment and adaptation measures” at S.Toraighyrov PSU.
The lecture was held in the framework of the International scientific-practical conference «Actual problems of ecology and environmental management of the Pavlodar region».
The scientist and trainees discussed the actual problem of the research “Development of the National Communication of the Republic of Kazakhstan within the framework of the UN FCCC and the Biennial Report” and “Sustainable Cities for Low-Carbon Development”.
Possible impacts of climate change were noted - forest fires, increasing pests in natural resources, desertification, water supply deficit, new atypical species of flora and fauna and other negative developments.
Undergraduates and students tried to answer the question: “What can we do to reduce the impact of climate change on the environment?”.
With the help of a special program, they calculated their “carbon footprint”. As a result, it was calculated that each person can reduce it, that is, reduce emissions in their daily lives - save energy consumption, use energy-efficient household appliances, prevent heat leaks from the room, use public transport more.
The lecturer offered students a practical tool to reduce carbon footprints - the UNDP experience in Kazakhstan: energy-efficient construction of new buildings, energy-efficient operation and modernization of existing buildings, modernization of lighting systems, and comprehensive modernization of a typical city block.
A. Belyi noted that for these instruments, UNDP has developed pilot projects for implementation in operation in Kazakhstan, while the Pavlodar region is among them.
